Wśród projektów finansowanych w ramach programów ramowych Unii Europejskiej na szczególną uwagę zasługują prestiżowe granty Europejskiej Rady ds. Badań Naukowych – European Research Council (ERC). Do tej pory ERC przyznała granty naukowcom z UW 43 razy, w tym raz badaczowi zagranicznemu, który swój grant realizuje na uczelni. Wsparcie przyznawane jest w pięciu kategoriach: ERC Starting Grant, ERC Consolidator Grant, ERC Advanced Grant, ERC Proof of Concept Grant oraz ERC Synergy Grant.

W 2016 roku prof. Grzegorz Pietrzyński z Obserwatorium Astronomicznego UW otrzymał grant ERC na projekt: A sub-percent distance scale from binaries and Cepheids. Grant został przeniesiony do PAN.
