Shevah Weiss
a former ambasador of Israel in Poland, an Israeli politician, diplomat and professor of the University of Warsaw, dedicated to promoting humanistic values and campaigning against anti-Semitism, he significantly contributed to the process of Polish–Jewish dialogue.
He was born in 1935 in Borysław (now Ukraine). He has lived and worked in Israel for most of his life. During the Nazi occupation the Weiss family was offered hide-out by their neighbours.
In 1944, after the entrance of the Soviet army the Weiss family moved back to their house, however, when Borysław was incorporated to the territory of Ukraine they moved to Poland and lived in Gliwice, Wałbrzych and Głuszyca. In 1946 the family decided to migrate to Palestine.
Shevah Weiss studied at the Faculty of Law in Tel-Aviv. The Professor’s title was granted to him at the University of Haifa. For many years he worked as an academic professor and radio journalist; among other activities, he was also writing books for children.
He served as a member of the board of the Haifa Municipality, he was a member of the Labour Party and a Member of Knesset. Over the period of 1992 - 1996 he served as Speaker of Knesset.
From 2000 to 2003 he was the ambassador of Israel in Poland. As a dedicated person, a follower of the philosophy of understanding, respect and supranational solidarity over the three years he managed to contribute to the process of Polish–Jewish reconciliation more than any other politician could do over decades.
