Webometrics ranks UW best Polish higher education institution

Our university was ranked 234th worldwide and first in Poland in the international Webometrics ranking. Despite our relatively low overall position, we made advancement having been ranked 113 places higher than last year.

We were also ranked very high among other European HEIs. In European ranking the University of Warsaw was ranked 86th thus having been placed as the only Polish HEI among 100 best ones in Europe.

Webometrics ranking is published twice a year. The University of Warsaw, which formerly was ranked 347th, six months later was ranked 293rd. Currently we are the leader among Polish HEIs.

On the list of the best 500 HEIs, apart from UW, there were six other Polish universities ranked.

• Jagiellonian University ranked 311th;
• Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań ranked 393rd;
• Wrocław University of Technology ranked 412th;
• University of Wrocław ranked 431st;
• Warsaw University of Technology ranked 435th;
• AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow ranked 488th.

In the latest edition more than 21 thousand HEIs were evaluated. As usual, the top positions were won by American Universities. Harvard University was ranked first, followed by Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Webometrics ranking has been published since 2004 and is issued by CSIC – the Superior Council for Scientific Research in Madrid. The ranking measures the web activities of HEIs, including the capacity and visibility of a website (with particular focus on publishing research outcomes), the impact of Open Access activities and website positioning in the Internet.

The main objective of Webometrics ranking is to promote free access to information, including scientific publications available online. Unlike other rankings of global scale, Webometrics evaluates all the HEIs which have their own website.
