Jakub Pachocki – the vice-champion of "2012 TopCoder Open Algorithm" tournament

On October 3rd in Orlando, Florida, the Finals of the TopCoder Open 2012 Tournament were held. The second place in the tournament in the "Algorithm" category was won by a third-year student of informatics, Jakub Pachocki. This year is exceptionally successful for Jakub Pachocki; it is worth mentioning that 2 months ago he won other important programming contest – "Google Code Jam 2012", and 3 months before that he was a member of the team of the University of Warsaw, who won the world vice-championship in collegiate programming Finals of ACM ICPC 2012, which were held in Warsaw and organised by the University of Warsaw.

Among 24 semi-finalists of TopCoder open 2102 there were two more representatives of Poland; both of them with the University of Warsaw background – Marcin Andrychowicz (a second-year student of master studies in informatics) and an associate of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw – Dr. Marek Cygan, who qualified for the ultimate final of the tournament.

TopCoder Open tournament is one of the most recognized individual contests in programming in the world, with the "Algorithm" category being the most prestigious one. Over the qualification process for this year’s tournament there were over 3500 candidates from all over the world – students, academic associates and professional programmers.

Another Polish participant of the finals in Orlando performed very well – Przemys³aw Dêbiak, who participated in the "Marathon" category (involving algorithmic problems requiring heuristic solutions with much longer time limit allowed than in the "Algorithm" category) won the second place.
