Thousands guests visited UW on Night of Museums

On May 19th night the main UW was vibrant with life. Thousands of visitors entered it through the main gate. Until late our guests were enjoying numerous attractions, among others, they could visit the Kazimierzowski Palace, the Columned Hall and the Museum of UW.

The University of Warsaw this year again invited general public to visit its historic buildings. The guests had an opportunity of visiting the Gold Room and the Chamber of the Senate, where access is otherwise restricted; they could also take a look at the campus from the terrace of the Kazimierzowski Palace. The photo stand was extremely popular, where our guests could be photographed while wearing gowns, with the portraits of UW rectors at the background.

Immediately after entering the campus through the main gate the guests were approaching the building of the UW Old Library, where they could see the exhibition entitled “The 19th century architecture of UW”. The Columned Hall was also extremely popular; its classicist interior impressed both the experts specializing in architecture and regular visitors.

The pedestrians strolling along Krakowskie Przedmieście were also gladly entering the Museum of UW. The Tyszkiewicz Palace had a unique look that night; the visitors’ attention was attracted by beautifully exposed, thanks to special illumination in blue, sculptures of Telamons. The visitors could enjoy a "Journey in time with the Museum of UW" – an exhibition organized on this occasion.

The Centre for East European Studies had their stand on the main campus, where the exhibition entitled "The Ukrainian Revolution of 1987-1991" as well as a documentary on the topic were presented.

As part of the Night of Museums at the University of Warsaw the visitors could also visit the special items collection room of the University Library, have a look at the only heavy ion accelerator in Poland, or enter the Radio Kampus studio and take a closer look at its daily operation.

The first Night of Museums was organised in Berlin in 1997, in 2001 it gained a European range. Today it is participated by approximately 120 European cities. The event is held under the patronage of the Council of Europe. In Poland the Night of Museums was first organised in 2003.
