Renewal of the doctor’s degree of Professor Wiesław Juszczak

The celebration of renewal of doctor’s degree of Professor Wiesław Juszczak, graduate of our University and long-time employee of the Institute of Art History of the University of Warsaw, outstanding historian, essayist, theoretician and philosopher of arts took place on 3rd April.

The Senate of the University of Warsaw took the decision to renew the scholar’s doctor’s degree on 12th December 2012 upon motion of the Council of the Department of History of the University of Warsaw. Professor Maria Poprzęcka was the supervisor of the laureate’s academic achievements, and Professors: Waldemar Okoń from the University of Wrocław, Czesław Robotycki from the Jagiellonian University and Elżbieta Wolicka-Wolszleger from the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin were its reviewers.

Professor Juszczak completed his studies at the University of Warsaw with an MA thesis entitled Bodzentyn triptych (Tryptyk bodzentyński). His doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 1962 at the Department of History of the University of Warsaw, focused on the works of Witold Wojtkiewicz.

The scholar has been working at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences uninterruptedly until today. He has been employed at the Institute of Art History of the University of Warsaw since 1985, and until 2011 he lectured at our University as Professor Emeritus. Moreover, he lectured art history at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. He supervised over 50 doctoral dissertations.

His main interest covers European art, theory of the 18 and 19 century art, Polish modernist paintings, archaic Greek philosophy of art, history and tradition of ornaments, as well as film history. His publications may be found i.a. in the following magazines: "Konteksty", "Kwartalnik Filmowy", "Zeszyty Literackie" and "Znak". In 2010, he was distinguished with the award of the Polish Pen Club.
