UW students enter the World Finals of ACM ICPC 2013

On November 17th in Cracow Academic Championship of Central Europe in Collegiate Programming was held. The representatives of the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics won the third place thus entering the finals of the contest.

This year’s edition of the contest was won by the students of Comenius University in Bratislava. The Slovak students solved 10 out of 11 problems in the shortest time span. Also the representatives of the Jagiellonian University managed to solve equal number of problems, however, they needed more time to perform this task. The students from Cracow won the second place. The third place was won by the team from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw, which consists of: Tomasz Kociumaka, Marcin Andrychowicz and Maciej Klimek. The students were better in terms of time than the champions and the vice-champions, however, one of the solutions was not correct.

There were 5 other teams who participated in the contest and represented the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics. They were classified at 4th, 7th, 11th, 20th and 22nd positions.

  • 4th position: Jakub Oćwieja, Mirosław Michalski, Jarosław Błasiok;
  • 7th position: Dawid Dąbrowski, Adam Karczmarz, Adrian Jaskółka;
  • 11th position: Wojciech Nadara, Grzegorz Prusak, Marcin Smulewicz;
  • 20th position: Łukasz Marecik, Kamil Yurtsever, Piotr Smulewicz;
  • 22nd position: Tom Macieszczak, Adam Nieżurawski, Bartłomiej Gajewski.

This year 77 teams representing the best higher education institutions of Central Europe were trying to solve the contest problems at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The students were required to solve 10 problems. The top three teams will participate in the finals of the oldest and most prestigious programming competition in the world – ACM ICPC, which are to be held in July 2013 in St. Petersburg
