The University of Warsaw among leaders in basic research
National Science Centre has published a ranking of units which were granted funding for their research projects and post-doctoral internships. UW was ranked second in terms of the sum granted, as well as the number of grants obtained. In the categories of “Exact and Technical Sciences” and “Humanities, Social Sciences and Art Studies” our university is ranked first, ahead of any other institution of higher education in Poland.
Over the period of 2011-2012 our university received funding from National Science Centre amounting in total to PLN 1289,061,242 and was aimed at supporting 407 research projects. The figures quoted rank our university on the second place among all the beneficiaries of National Science Centre in terms of the number of projects as well as the total sum granted. As regards the categories quoted Jagiellonian University is the leader with PLN 156,025,805 granted for 409 projects (including the projects carried out by Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University). National Science Centre has also published ranking according to particular fields of research. Our university is leading in “Humanities, Social Sciences and Art Studies” (PLN34,346,072 for 199 research projects). Jagiellonian University is ranked second (PLN27,126,289 for 132 research projects). [more (pl)]
In “Exact and Technical Sciences” we are ahead of any Polish universities of technology. We are the leader, with 160 research projects and the funding of PLN70,895,484. AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow is ranked second with the funding of PLN60,634,030 for 137 projects.[more (pl)]
In the category of “Life Sciences” Jagiellonian University is the leader (including the projects of Collegium Medicum). The University of Warsaw was ranked fourth with PLN23,819,686 granted by National Science Centre for funding 48 projects.[more (pl)]
The ranking published by national Science Centre presents 257 units, which received a total number of 4360 grants amounting in total to PLN1,537,175,905. The ranking accounts the winners of fifteen calls announced by the agency in five editions resolved in:
- 2011 r. – HARMONIA 1, OPUS 1, SONATA 1, PRELUDIUM 1,
- 2012 r. – HARMONIA 2, MAESTRO 1 and 2, OPUS 2 and 3, PRELUDIUM 2 and 3, SONATA 2 and 3, SONATA BIS 1 and the first edition of NCN POST-DOCTORAL INTERNSHIPS (FUGA 1).
The National Science Centre (NCN) is a government executive agency set up to fund basic research aimed at acquiring general knowledge of the world and its phenomena, which generally has no immediate practical application or use in economy.
